About Our Special Guests:

Thought Admiral Krikor epetai-jechwl’(Krikor Ajemian)

Thought Admiral Krikor epetai-jechwI'
(Krikor Ajemian), Toronto, Ontario

Krikor first became aware of KAG back in early 1992, when he went to his first convention in Montreal. There he saw a bunch of folks dressed as Klingons. He hung around their club table, and picked up some of their newsletters, but he was too shy to talk to them directly. One of the newsletters had full instructions on how to make your own headpiece. He resolved to make himself a 'Worf' costume. By that October, he had the yellow Starfleet tunic done; he went to another convention and again was too shy to make contact with the Klingons. Two weeks later at Halloween, he had the headpiece and baldric finished and wore his full Worf costume for the first time.

When the next convention rolled into town in the spring of 1993, he finally got up the courage to join KAG. In that first year, he made a "classic" Klingon, an "Imperial" Klingon, and a Romulan costume for variety. In the next couple of years, he became more active and involved, so that by the time 1996 rolled around, he was a Lieutenant Commander.

1996 was the year that the leaders of Kag Kanada officially split with the rest of KAG, and he followed along like the rest of the troops. At almost exactly the same time, the very large Montreal ship was split into two for ease of administration, and he was asked to command one of those ships. Thus was the IKV Cold Thunder launched ("By the time you hear us coming, we have already struck!"). He commanded that ship for the next few years, picking up a promotion to Commander along the way.

In 1999 he moved to Toronto. The Klingon scene in Toronto at that time was in rather a shambles; in the first year he was there, there were a couple of meetings but no actual costumed events. At one of those meetings he joined a ship, the IKV Howling, only to find a while later that the CO had quit the club to have a baby and left him in charge of the ship. He renamed the ship the IKV Cloaked Talon (later Crimson Talon) and tried to re-establish some order.

But in the fall of 2000, a number of highly placed officers in KAG Kanada had a falling out with the leaders of that club, and as a result had a revolutionary idea, quite literally: they decided to rejoin the original KAG, and take as many with them as they could. He was one of those people. Over the next few months, we wrangled out the details of this new entity within KAG, and in July of 2001, the Crimson Knight Fleet was officially launched. Krikor was made quadrant commander of the Scarlet Shield quadrant at that time.

A year later, Krikor became fleet commander for the Crimson Knight Fleet, a position he still hold. But in addition to this Navy position, in that time Krikor has become involved in other branches of the KAG family: Marines (as Field Marshall for my fleet), IXL (as Vice-Legate), and Quartermasters (as primary costume maker for the members in my area). He has also gotten to know the Klingons from the rest of KAG, people like Keela, Qat'Iy, Chonbey, Salek, and many others. KAG has become his new family.

Nor has he forgotten those who inspired him along the way. K'Hack, his first commander, who showed him that being Klingon is all about attitude. K'Athee, who gave him his first chance at command. Kasarr, who was the heart and soul of the Crimson Knight Fleet in its infancy. And Kerla, who for the last eleven or twelve years has been his mentor, his guide, his navigator on the choppy waters of Klingon politics. When reaching for the stars, it helps to stand on the shoulders of giants.

Krikor which is his god given name, is the first Thought Admiral of KAG from outside of the United States. In addition to his administrative duties as leader of KAG, Krikor stays active at the local level of the club, and will be helping to launch a new mini-convention, KAG Fest, in Toronto next January. He is also well known for his costuming, having won several master-level awards at Worldcons, notably for his "Klingon Batman" mashup costume. Always looking for a new twist on the Klingon look, he has also appeared at conventions in recent years as "Klingon 300" and "Klingon Green Lantern".

Krikor has always been a strong proponent of the costuming aspect of his club. "Other fan clubs let you pretend to be your favorite character online, in the privacy of your own home. KAG expects you to actually walk the walk, by wearing the armor and the prosthetics. You don't really know what it's like to be a Klingon until you've worn the outfit."

Krikor, along with his fleet executive officer grelbr and his lovely parmaqqai qIjtoQ, will be attending ConQuest 43 this Memorial Day Weekend (May 25-27) at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center, Kansas City, MO. Krikor is especially looking forward to tasting Kansas City Barbecue, which combines three of a Klingon's favorite things: "meat, fire, and eating without forks."

KRIS (aka John Halvorson)

John Halvorson, a Hollywood screenwriter, started a Klingon fan club in Seattle in 1979. That club declined when Halvorson moved to Michigan, but gave him the ideas and determination to try again. In 1989, Halvorson formed another club, The KLINGON ASSAULT GROUP (KAG), based on the "bad guys" of STAR TREK, and KAG is still going strong over 20 years later.

Halvorson still plays as a Klingon named KRIS, complete with uniform, headpiece, and a happy sense of menace for STAR TREK-related events and conventions. Klingon fans are usually perceived as a pretty serious-minded bunch. However, Halvorson thinks differently. "For years, KAG has done the "playfully serious" thing. Now it's time for us to be "SERIOUSLY PLAYFUL." Klingons have changed over the years, and Halvorson prefers the early era Klingons, before there was peace between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. "Playing the Antagonist is a lot more fun," he says.

Halvorson is quite an active Klingon, too. Not only is KRIS the club's Founder, but he and his Los Angeles friends have a local KAG ship, the IKV DARK SUN. Recently, Halvorson assumed command of KLIN-FIRE, the KAG Fleet comprising all of the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones. "Hey, don't forget Alaska and Hawaii", he adds. And the KLINGON ASSAULT GROUP is growing out west by bringing back what STAR TREK fans have always preferred from the Klingons. "They're just so good at being 'bad'".

Halvorson and some of his friends from L.A.'s IKV DARK SUN will be heading to CONQUEST 43 -- Memorial Day Weekend, May 25-27, 2012 at the Sheraton Kansas City Hotel at Crown Center, Kansas City, MOO http://kag.org As Halvorson, or KRIS puts it: "We'll be celebrating the 'KLINGON NEW YEAR' with batleths and barbecue!!"
